Why Easter Eggs Are Called Easter Eggs

The term “Easter Egg” was coined by Atari back in 1980. Warren Robinett was a developer who hid his name in a secret room in the game Adventure because Atari didn’t allow developers to have credits at the time. 🥚✨

Building on that, when players discovered the secret, Atari’s director of software compared the hunt for the hidden room to an Easter egg hunt. Rather than getting angry, the company decided to start encouraging developers to hide secrets in their games to keep players engaged.

Furthermore, the tradition has exploded. From the secret “Cow Level” in Diablo to the hidden photos in GTA, Easter eggs are now a core part of gaming culture. If a modern game doesn’t have a hidden secret, it feels like it’s missing a piece of its soul!
